The “e-filing lite” facility was introduced by the Income-tax Department on Thursday, January 1 to facilitate easy and quick filing of returns by taxpayers. This facility is operational on the official portal of the department. The new e-filing facility comes a few days after the Central Board of Direct Taxes extended the due date for filing income-tax returns.
What Is e-Filing Lite?
“The Income Tax Department is launching a ‘e-filing lite’, a liteer version of the e-filing portal, with a focus on filing income tax returns (ITRs) by taxpayers.”

What Changes Have Been Made In The New e-Filing!
A senior official said that a new tab was provided for “lite” on the web portal and once the registered taxpayer logged in to his page, they will be provided only the necessary links which will be provided for ITR and Form 26AS Enable e-filing (for tax deduction) source credit). He said that other regular tabs like e-Action, e-Resolve, compliance, agenda and profile setting were removed from “lite Edition”, but it was retained in the standard version of the e-filing facility.

How To Fill A New e-Filing!
Here’s how you can download ITR Excel utility through e-filing website of Income Tax Department. In addition, to download predefined XML to prefabricate personal and tax details in the ITR Excel utility, follow steps 5 through 12.
Step 1: Go to the Income Tax e-filing portal, that is, incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in website. Go to the ‘Download’ section and click on ‘IT Return Preparation Software’.
Step 2: After clicking on ‘IT Return Preparation Software’, you will be sent to the ‘Income Tax Utilities’ screen, select the assessment year and click on the appropriate ITR (ie ITR form number which is applicable for you). Excel utility hyperlink
Step 3: When you click on the ITR form number that you want to download, the ITR Excel Utility Zip file will be automatically downloaded in the ‘Downloads’ folder of your system.
From the Downloads folder, right click on the downloaded zip file and then click on the ‘Extract All’ option.
Step 4: Open the folder in which the zip file is extracted. Double click ‘Excel File’ to open the ITR Excel utility. Before downloading, keep ITR Excel ready and import personal and tax details from the prefilled XML file into ITR Excel form.
Now, here is how you can download and import the prefilled XML file after 5 to 12 steps:
Step 5: Go to the incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in website again under the ‘registered user’ option, click on the ‘login here’ tab.
Step 6: The taxpayer has to enter his User ID (his PAN number), password, CAPTCHA code, and then click on the ‘Login’ tab.
Step 7: Once successfully logged in, go to the ‘My Account’ dropdown menu. Click ‘Download pre-filled XML’.
Step 8: Now you will be directed to pre download premiere xml, where your pane will be auto-populated. You have to select ‘Assessment Year’, for which you are filing income tax returns. From the second dropdown, select ‘ITR form’, which you want to file. After that, click on the ‘Continue’ tab.
Step 9: Select bank account for credit refund. You have to do this regardless of whether you have a refund or not. After that click on the ‘Download XML’ button to download an already filled XML file (the file will download automatically in the ‘Downloads’ folder of your system).
Step 10: Now both the ITR form and the prefilled XML file will be downloaded in the ‘Download’ folder of your system.
Step 11: Open the downloaded ITR Excel utility (if not yet downloaded, see step 1 to step 4) and import from prefilled XML ‘from the right hand panel of the general information schedule of the general person’ Personal and Click on ‘Tax Details’. ITR form.
Step 12: Browse and select the downloaded predefined XML file and click on ‘Open’ button and import the details in ITR Excel form.
All personal and tax details available with the tax e-filing portal will be prefilled in the appropriate ITR Excel form. Save the information filled in the form in advance. However, remember that it is your responsibility to check all pre-determined details before submitting and correct them if needed.
Last Day Of e-Filing ?
The official said that the “lite” version is intended to enable easy and quick ITR filing by all categories of taxpayers.
Taxpayers now have until August 31 to file their income tax returns.
On 23 July, the government extended the deadline for filing income tax returns by individuals to 31 August for the financial year 2018-19.
